Hi everyone!

Hi everyone!
I have questions. If you're experienced with online teaching (or have been giving it a lot of thought),

Are there things you've found that you can do in the physical classroom that you can't do online?

Or things you can do online that you can't do (as well) in the physical classroom?

How do your teaching methods change for online classrooms?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Interesting topic!

    One of the parts I like teaching f2f classes is that you get instant feedback from everyone.
    For example, if you say a joke in the classroom, students will laugh immediately after your remark. Since you will be pausing most of the student's videos, you will not hear any laughter. Then I have to laugh by myself, which is a bit awkward. (-;

  2. Yuko Kato Thank you, Yuko. I had never thought about that kind of thing!

  3. Back in 1991 three of us were sitting around shots of tequilas in a Mexican restaurant and Frank came up with what I call Frank's Rule: If it can be done on paper, it has no place online. (Meaning play to the strenghts of each. Paper has no up-ramp to use, so only use tech where paper doesn't work.)

  4. There is a good short book about things best done online rather than in a classroom. Free, too. routledge.com - FreeBook - Online & Blended Learning: Selections from the Field - Routledge

  5. Totally agree with Yuko that this is an excellent topic to share and add to as we gain experience. Thank you Yuko Kato and Kevin Ryan for the insightful shares!

  6. Kevin Ryan So... paper doesn't move or speak, and can't always be seen by a large number of people at the same time. That sort of thing?
