Week 3 Assignment:
•Meet one of your colleagues in Zoom and imagine you meet your language learner whom you would like to introduce to a great learner resource online, a website, a piece of software or an app
•Before or after the session watch a YouTube recording of someone explaining a similar website/ software or app
•Note down ESP expressions
Just to make sure I understand the task correctly, may I ask:
1. Is this task somewhat like the one we did in Week 1, just that this time the 'teacher' is talking about a resource online/website/software/app?
2. How does ESP come in? Can you give some examples of ESP for this task?
3. Do we need to take turns to switch our roles as teacher and student?
4. Is there a limit to the timing of each recording?
Heike Philp, Phil Brown, Barbara Hoskins Sakamoto
I need also to have this background about the questions of Eunice, so I look forward to the answers before Hosein Azizvakili meet me this evening. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAnd one more thing in my case. I am not an English speaker; I teach Spanish. So I don’t feel the one that can correct anything on English expressions... how can I manage this, Heike Philp ?
ReplyDeleteHi Eunice Tan Montse Veyrat thank you for asking. Describing software is a linguistic challenge. Using appropriate vocabulary is like learning a new language. For v example is it: to hover your mouse over a button and see the tool tip or is it move your mouse to the square function and then you see a description? Both describe the same but one sounds professional. This is what I mean with ESP. it is English for Specific purposes. A set of terminologies specific to describing software features. (or is it functions?)
ReplyDeleteI found little on the net to help us do so.
techterms.com - Dictionary of Software Terms this is a dictionary but does not help to describe software.
The only way I learned it was by listening to YouTube. I also wrote some tutorials but this is rather a difficult language to learn.
Just an additional thought because you mentioned that you teach Spanish. Software English is a language you speak, not teach. If you have a student join your class in Zoom, a student who wants to learn Spanish might be a German or an American. So you will need to tell the student on how to activate the text chat, how to share his or her screen, right? So best is to watch the videos produced by Zoom, familiarize yourself with the specific expressions so that you can sound professional during what is known to be 'onboarding'..... (another specific expression)
ReplyDeleteHeike Philp, that's very helpful. Thanks for the prompt reply!
ReplyDeleteHeike Philp That is so beneficial. Right now, if I were asked to explain how to use a software in English, my English would completely fall apart.... I need a list of expressions like this....https://eigogakusyu-web.com/phrase/030/ (This is too simple for online teachers).
ReplyDeleteAlso, Heike, was there a reason why you didn't use the same microphone this week? Last week, I understood 100% of what you said but this week, I only understood 90% due to the audio issue. Because of that, I missed some information...e.g. how you "write down" your partner's speech errors. Are we supposed to use an online notepad or just use a real pen and jot down on a sheet of real paper?

Heike Philp so true all you say! I had in mind to speak about all these things also in the language i teach (full immersion from the first day!) without realizing that this is impossible and overall because usually they dont know spanish at all.
ReplyDeleteVery good organized course, Heike Philp, i am so happy to have joined you on this course! Thank you again for your strong work.
Yuko Kato thank you for the link to the list of expressions. I seems to be very useful but unfortunatelly here in Spain i cant open the link... sniff
Eunice Tan - Yes, do switch roles.
ReplyDeleteHeike Philp - How long should the videos be? 3-4 minutes (so it stays interesting)? Longer? Or depends on the app etc and how interesting it is?!
Hi Yuko Kato thank you so much for the list. I really like them and there are a total of 8 pages like this, some about web, some about PC, some about cell phone, brilliant. Exactly what I have been looking for and couldnt find it. Navigate from https://eigogakusyu-web.com/phrase/029/ to https://eigogakusyu-web.com/phrase/036/ (there are arrows at the bottom of each page to go to the next page)
ReplyDeleteAs regards error correction, not sure where to do them. I thought during the Zoom lesson but a) there is no time really and b) the chat is not on the recordings. So perhaps it is best to do this on the G+ under comments
Phil Brown Yes, 3-4 min is fine.
ReplyDeleteHeike Philp Ok, thank you. Now it's all clear!
