I decided what I wanted to do for the last assignment was to show you how to function minimally in Minecraft but to do that I would need OBS (open broadcast software) so I could screencast Minecraft and overlay my video, but I needed to download OBS and then remember how to work it. It occurred to me that I could show you how to do that plus I could show you in Zoom. It turned out to be more complicated than planned but I learned quite a lot in the process.

For one thing, I could not get the whole thing to work in one go so I needed a video editing software. To edit my video from Zoom I need to figure out how to use Windoze Photo app, which took a lot of figuring out. None of this was straightforward so I learned more than I had set out to do today, and in the end was challenged and enriched by the process.

Hope you enjoy the result. If you're new to OBS and think you can use it you'll need a 15 min run through like this to save you 15 hours trying to work it out on your own.

I met Edwin online and introduced how to create a private friend list on Facebook so that you can share your post with only certain friends.

However, the first recording had several black boxes. After spending two days figuring how to fix the problem, I created another one with Edwin's video embedded. I'm sorry, Edwin!

I still have a problem. I used a special cursor--the yellow circle, but it didn't show.

Lots of English mistakes, including "List the name" --- >"Name the list."

Thank you Nataliia star25016 for finding time to play the role of avery patient learner :)

I am introducing VocabKitchen to Nataliia star25016. Couldn't find a single How to... tutorial on this teaching/learning app, so tried to do my best to explain how Vocab Kitchen works. There is no appropriate vocabulary in my introduction, though I did research on usefull words and phrases for the purpose:

interface, navigation, click on icons, create your account, drag and drop
items from your desktop into your drive, search and install third party apps.,
click on drop - down arrow to view all the folders, some items appear at the
top, undo the action if you must, three-dotted icon provides you with more
actions, etc :)

Will facilitate my learners with the opportunity to learn the above mentioned vocabulary, and will learn them as well. They are not my active vocabulary at the moment.

I have again only obliquely addressed the task for this week.

I have again only obliquely addressed the task for this week. The prompt was a request from the Games and Learning Community Group in EDUCAUSE to present a "lightning talk" at their conference in Denver on Nov 1, and do it asynchronously through a recording. The talk is to explain to them how to join EVO Minecraft MOOC and why they would want to do that in the first place. So there was a real audience of English NS peers. I was joined in Zoom by my son who called himself "Teacher Vance" (my Minecraft name) but though that label appeared on my screen during the performance, it came out as a blank icon in the recording. His job in any event was only to run the PPT slide show in full screen, share it in Zoom, and advance the slides for me. Voila le résultat.

Dear All

Dear All,
Am sharing an online event with a special guest, an expert in Teenage Money Matters, Heike Philp My learner Ostap is helping to do my Week 2 assignment, and is being very nervous.
He's been my English class student for three years and is really bright.
Thank you Heike Philp for editting the video. It was twice ad long as it was supposed to be according to the task.
Hope i'll learn to use the tool as well.
Haaaaappy to be on the course and learn from all participants.

Week 3 Assignment:

Week 3 Assignment:

•Meet one of your colleagues in Zoom and imagine you meet your language learner whom you would like to introduce to a great learner resource online, a website, a piece of software or an app
•Before or after the session watch a YouTube recording of someone explaining a similar website/ software or app
•Note down ESP expressions

Just to make sure I understand the task correctly, may I ask:

1. Is this task somewhat like the one we did in Week 1, just that this time the 'teacher' is talking about a resource online/website/software/app?
2. How does ESP come in? Can you give some examples of ESP for this task?
3. Do we need to take turns to switch our roles as teacher and student?
4. Is there a limit to the timing of each recording?

Anne did a wonderful job as a host (!), and I had so much fun experimenting and learning all about the Zoom.

As you can see, my presentation is short and sloppy, but I spent lots of time exploring what I can do with this platform. My learning objectives were...
1) to use various sound files effectively
2) to try different layout styles
3) to experiment how virtual background works.

Some of the tricks I learned this week....

--It is possible to have fake participants or virtual guests--it would be useful in case guest speakers can't make it to the meeting. This only worked with my iPhone 8 (not iPhone 5 or my old iPad).

--You can embed a sound file on each PPT slide and create sounds as if someone were speaking.

--You will not hear the sound unless you put a check mark on "Share Computer Sound" when you share your PPT file. (...so I should be able to hear the BGM of Kahoot?)

--It is possible to change the vertical layout style so you can view in Side-by-Side Mode. Just drag the video boxes and push toward the top of the screen.

--Only four participants were shown (and one person's video box was hidden) probably because I didn't put a check mark on "Display up to 49 participants."

Hi everyone.

Hi everyone. Hosein Azizvakili invited me to visit his class of teacher trainees in Tehran and speak to them about learner autonomy, though I was determined to model and demonstrate the process by which they could become autonomous teachers by talking WITH them about their practice and reflection (thereby making them the experts who were visiting me). I expected Zoom to cut us off at 40 min, and the first 10 min was setup and equipment adjustment, which I recorded because I thought it was instructive. Anyway we kept going not for 30 min but for almost 50 (expecting the cutoff at any minute). Sorry about that (you can just watch the first ten, and the last ten where Hossein's students become the experts and tell me about their challenges teaching in Tehran).

This is raw video. I'm leaving on a trip later today so I didn't have time for editing or enhancement. Also I learned (again) to be very aware of what Zoom is doing as opposed to what you see on your screen. The first part was fine, we went from gallery view as you see in the thumbnail to slide show (screen share) where the two cameras shared the top of the screen, but when I stopped the screen share I saw my audience on the screen with my camera at the top. But when I saw the video I realized that we were in speaker mode, and mostly the last part was talking head with me doing most of the talking. Note to self, after leaving screen share monitor whether you are in speaker mode or camera matrix mode. The latter is much more effective when there is a speaker and an audience. Nice that Hossein put the camera on the class throughout.

Enjoy, and I'll try to make it on Sunday, not sure how that will work out at this moment though.

Waiting for some ideas!

Learning2gether episode 394 will take place Fri Oct 19 0530 UTC when Vance Stevens connects with Hossein Vakili's class of ELT teachers in Tehran

Hossein has asked Vance to present at a web conference for his teachers and colleagues at Raja Language Institute in Tehran and speak to them about learner autonomy, which Vance suggests has to start out with teachers themselves becoming autonomous learners.

Participants can read beforehand:

Stevens, Vance. (2007). The Multiliterate Autonomous Learner: Teacher Attitudes and the Inculcation of Strategies for Lifelong Learning. Independence, Winter 2007 (Issue 42) . Available: VanceStevens_multiliterateAutonomousLearner.pdf

Hossein's students are to read / review Vance’s materials and be prepared to ask questions in order to hold a conversation with the invited speaker (15 min). Online participants in the event will then be invited to speak to Hossein and his students about their view of online facilitation (15 min).

We've downloaded the recording from the second live session, and made it available to view on YouTube, and to download from Dropbox. As always, please don't share the recordings with anyone not registered for this course.

The recording on YouTube:

Download the recording via dropbox:

There are usually two reasons people have problems watching the playback from Adobe Connect, which you might run into if you need people to be able to watch a session of yours, too.

One is bandwidth. Heike and Phil have been modeling how to deal with this issue as they help members of our community with bandwitdh challenges.

The second is the Flash plugin, which Adobe uses. They are in the process of changing to html 5, wihch will make the recordings watchable on all devices. Until then, if you are using a mobile device and having problems with the recordings, you might try downloading the Puffin browser (iOS and Android). The recordings will play in Puffin.

We'll go ahead and download the first week's live session and make that available for download and on YouTube, but I wanted to get you this most recent recording first.

Hi everyone! Please accept my apologies for the very late upload, almost at the 11th hour - due to issues with scheduling and then a power cut!

Anyway, I'm happy to share a short lesson on introducing word connections and word webs to help learn and remember vocabulary and develop vocabulary learning strategies :-)

I hope that this is of some interest and/or use:

Late as usual here, I am about to watch the video of the first session, then read messages to catch up before tomorrow (night for me, I am in Tokyo).

I've got a lot of experience with edtech, starting way back before the Internet, and even before Windows (I started with DOS 2.0 really, but did some Unix before that). I was 2x President of the Tokyo PC Users Group and 3x president of the JALT CALL SIG. Most of my research has been in CALL, but lately tending toward the more broad edtech.

I taught Japanese online in 2003 for US high school students through a corporate setup that was the worst of both online and classroom worlds. Learned a lot about what not to do.

I use Moodle for my classes, administer it myself, and plan to adapt it to online teaching when I retire. I have the next 3 years to get up to speed. So I am just checking out more the management end of the experience. Looking forward to workshopping with illuminaries like Heike and Vance, as well as all you guys out there. See you tomorrow!

Hello, everyone!

Hello, everyone!
Here is my video ---Introducing honorific verbs and reviewing some Chinese characters. I changed Japanese characters on the PPT to English so everyone can see what's going on.

Sadly, I already found some English errors in my speech as I haven't taught Japanese in English for a long time.... Also, I found out I didn't use my external microphone because Zoom automatically changed it to the default one. I must be careful next time.

Nevertheless, it was a great learning experience! I look forward to seeing everyone's video, too.

Hi everyone!

Hi everyone!
I have questions. If you're experienced with online teaching (or have been giving it a lot of thought),

Are there things you've found that you can do in the physical classroom that you can't do online?

Or things you can do online that you can't do (as well) in the physical classroom?

How do your teaching methods change for online classrooms?

Thanks in advance!

Hi, my partner Fernanda Taranco and I met today and recorded our first class (another one to come...) We had great fun and Fernanda was a model student ;-) I was only slightly horrified when I played back the recording! I don't stop moving and I talk over my student (I find this really difficult, knowing when to speak to avoid speaking at the same time, it seems to happen a lot. Maybe it's just practice...?) I couldn't seem to hide my navigation bar for the slides in the bottom left hand corner, maybe someone can help me on that one... I was using Google Slides. Oh and my class is 5 mins too long, sorry... I did, however, find it a really useful experience and it's got me off the mark, I have now taught my first class online, yay!

Hi everyone!

Hi everyone!

I'm a little late and happy to be able to join this course now! I'll do my best to catch up with you all.

I'm from Brazil and I've been teaching EFL for more than 20 years. I work with adults and teens. At the moment I'm living in a small town about 300kms from São Paulo where I used to live. Due to this moving, I started teaching online 5 years ago in order to keep my classes with my private students from São Paulo.
Besides that, I teach high school students at a private school here and I teach English privately to teens and adults. I'm sure this course will help me improve my online teaching skills.

How do you find a common time even if your partner is in a different timezone?
There are two possibilities which I have been using a lot.
www.doodle.com and www.timeanddate. com
Doodle is great if you want to suggest a set of 2 or 3 or more options for meetings. The time suggestions adjust automatically to the timezone of your meeting partners.
Timeanddate is great if you already know when you would like to meet.
For this I use the time announcer of timeanddate.com

Hi everyone!

Hi everyone! I'll be the moderator for the Sunday live sessions in the Adode Room. I'm here to help, and I'm looking forward to learning and sharing with you.

Just this week, I was reminded that my first "online" or video-conferencing class I did was around 2003-4 in a language school in Japan where some students bought a system that worked through their TV. My first Skype student, however, was about 10 years later - a friend's wife who needed her IELTS for a visa to go to the UK, but at that time, I just thought of a Skype lesson as being the next best option since we couldn't meet face-to-face.

Whilst completing my MA TEFL/TESL by distance learning with various elements online, I met Steven Herder who'd set up a Skype MA study group. Pooling ideas and resources with others, we collaborated via Skype and with Google docs, etc to organise events, conferences and online courses from 2007 onwards. Then in 2009, I became a tutor on the MA Applied Linguistics and TESOL programmes and have been further supporting online teacher development as a volunteer Mentor for iTDi since 2012. In February this year, Steve and I launched The Teachers Room so I've been using Adobe Room weekly since February and now Zoom in recent months.

I've also introduced Zoom to my recent online students as an alternative to Skype and the results have been very positive. So, with the rapid advances in technology and more students opting for online lessons, plus having taken online courses myself, I see more and more doors and windows of opportunity opening - and so I hope that we may all find and create new paths and dreams whilst learning together and supporting each other.

Dear All

Dear All,
My name is Mariia Ruban. I have been teaching English at secondary schools in Ukraine since 1984. Have had a lot of experience facilitating teenagers with the opportunity to become conscious sitizens.
Believe that the teacher has more power in their classroom than any Prime Minister in their Cabinet. So I have been doing my best to use this opportunity and make a difference in my learners' lives.
I have been thinking teaching and teaching thoughts since I graduated from the Pedagogical University in 1984.
I am here on the course to learn and share.
Hope the course will be enjoyable to all.
CU there :)

Hi everyone!!

Hi everyone!!

I'm from Montevideo, Uruguay. I have currently lived in Tacuarembó- in the north- for 11 years. I’ve been teaching English for more than 20 years now. I worked for different institutions, both in primary and secondary schools, always in the private sector. Nowadays, I prepare students for Cambridge First, Advanced and CPE. I work in Company, also teaching beginner and advanced adults. My experience with online teaching is scant, through Skype and always combined with face-to-face classes. I would like to broaden my field of work in the future to come. See you all on Sunday!

Hello. It's very nice to meet you all!!

Hello. It's very nice to meet you all!!

I am originally from Japan and have been teaching Japanese at various schools including colleges, high schools, etc. since 1994. I started teaching online last year, using VoiceThread, Adobe Connect, and Zoom.

I have taken Heike's online class several month ago and really loved it, so I can't wait to join this course!

Hello everyone.

Hello everyone. I am Shi Min, but you can also call me Eunice. I teach English to students aged 13-17 in a Malaysian secondary school. I am entering third year of teaching in the school. Being a newbie in this field, I look forward to learning from all of you here! :)

This isn't my last word, but I created an introduction using an app for iPad I've used often to record sessions at TESOL conferences, where you want to move around from station to station and record whatever you can stick your tablet in front of. For some reason it didn't come out well in portrait view, I think maybe at conferences I was using landscape. Anyway, it recorded live on my YouTube channel so you can have a look here, https://youtu.be/nC5bkM56irg, and I'll record a better one later.

Hi everyone!

Hi everyone!
I’m Maria Anna and I live in Bozen. Although I live and work in South Tyrol, I come from the south of Italy and my family still lives there. I studied English at the University of Bari and got my degree in foreign languages (German and English). I like foreign languages very much. I teach English as a foreign language to teens in a Professional School. I have been teaching for 11 years and I like doing this job.

Hi

Hi,
I've just recorded my introduction using zoom for the first time (as you will see I couldn't work out how to turn it off! :-) I couldn't work out how to attach the video to this post either so I uploaded it to Google Drive. I imagine there is a more direct way...?
Looking forward to the course, see you Sunday!

Hi everyone!

Hi everyone! My name is Anne. I teach very young learners (ages 2+) at an eikaiwa (private conversation school) in Japan. Mainly, this means I get to read stories, sing songs, and be a human jungle gym for a living. It's exactly as much fun as it sounds.
I don't currently teach online at all. A few years ago I had a regular online student who I taught through Skype. I taught her for about four years. It was ok, but I always got the feeling I wasn't fully exploiting the potential of online teaching. I also have experience of online learning as a student in my distance MA course.
The rest of my online teaching knowledge comes secondhand from friends who create curriculum and teach for companies and friends who run their own Moodle LMS.
I'm looking forward to learning more about how to teach online even though it's not part of my current context. You never know what the future will hold. I'm especially interested in learning about ways to make online learning accessible to people in areas with slow internet or limited access. I'm also interested in online learning as it applies to young learners - since in the face-to-face classroom they need a faster pace and plenty of time to move and exercise their motor skills. How does that work online?
I am excited to learn from this community - iTDi course members always come with a wealth of information. See you on Sunday!

May I give this a start with an introduction of myself in video format.

May I give this a start with an introduction of myself in video format. If you want to try this too, please go to Zoom.us and create an account and host your first meeting and hit record. You will find the recording in a folder called 'Zoom' under 'My Documents' and you still need to double click it to convert. But it is not that difficult, give it a try.
If you want to write an introduction this is fine too.

I'll mostly be in the background during this course, along with Phil Brown, Steven Herder and Gareth Knight. You'll get email messages from me after each live session with a link to the recording, a transcript of the chat, Heike's slides, and any resources shared. Those will also be added to this community for your convenience.

If you run into problems figuring out how things work, you can always send me a message by email, or here. Just post your problem in the "Help" category. You can make sure I see your message by putting a "+" in front of my name.

I'm excited to have a chance to learn along with you!

A warm welcome to all of the participants of the Advance Teaching Skills course "Teaching Online".

A warm welcome to all of the participants of the Advance Teaching Skills course "Teaching Online".

I am delighted to see your interest in this specialized field of teaching a language to learners around the world in real-time.

These are still early days and you are "early adopters", you are "webinerds".

This course will hopefully prove to be a step in your career. And we are not talking about replacing your local teaching with online teaching. Well, it is more like: we have two legs, one should be the offline one and one should be online. You stand firm using both legs and if you decide to move on from one teaching post to the other, it might be easier for you if you keep getting income from online jobs.

And even if you don't get more work through teaching online.... this can happen... then you will be able to get to know your colleagues and will learn where you can turn to for professional development. There are many online courses, yes, even Master degree programs online.

There are many opportunities.

Look forward to meeting you online!

rgds Heike
